I used to think that Spring began on March 21st.

However, I have just watched the weather on BBC News 24 and the presenter stated that met office statisticians believe that spring starts on 1 March (with summer beginning on 1 June, autumn on 1 September and winter on 1 December).

Apparently the beginning of spring has been brough forward due to global warming.

Can this be right?

The OFFICIAL date is still 21st March which is the Vernal Equinox.

That will not change even if we get an ice age!!! It is totally dependant on the angle of the Earth to the Sun and not when the first daffodils show.

The start date of spring is NOT officially the 21st of March, nor is it the vernal equinox. The vernal equinox actually marks the half-way point. Likewise, the Summer solstice, is "mid-summer", or the middle of summer. Therefore, Spring starts around February 4th, Summer starts May 7th, Autumn on August 7th, and Winter of November 7th.

The official start of spring (March 21) is called the vernal (spring) equinox and is dictated by the earth's orbit around the sun... We've passed the point where the north pole is now tilted in the direction of the sun instaed of away from it. We are having spring-like weather earlier each year due to the warming trend the earth is currently experiencing, some people call it 'global warming'. It doesn't really mean spring starts any sooner in celestial terms.

With regards spring time starting,then i think that is more down to the gardeners and farmers who will be able to tell you.but British summer time begins at 2am on the last sunday in march and winter time starts on the last sunday in october at 2am.a lot of people get confused which one goes forward a hour and which goes back a hour.it is pretty easy to remember if you take SPRING (march) as it says spring forward,and as the americans call autumn FALL,so there for the october time falls back a hour.
SPRING = forward a hour.
FALL = back a hour. hope this helps.

If we consent to the definition that spring starts on the day of best vernal equinox, that is when the center of the sun in on the plane of equator of the earth, then it's hard to believe that global warming can change that.

At any rate, you can verify that yourself by marking the highest exactly north, or the lowest exactly south, angle of the shade of a string-hung mass around noon local time. On the day that that angle equals your exact local lattidue, your spring technically starts.

Correct! Seasons have changed a lot. This year, in our country we didn't have a long winter for the first time... And now the spring season seems to have begin....

I beleive the next generations will learn the seasons in a very different way...

it is march 21st. i don't see why they've moved them all forwards as summer is lasting well into September. they will have to start shortening some seasons and lengthening others until its one big long summer!
