Weather - August 2006

Where I live we never have tornadoes, yet we've had three warnings and two touch downs in the last two months. We now have the most amazing thunder and lightening storms too. Last week we had baseball sized hail. Not to mention the weather elsewhere in the world - there are more earthquakes, tsunamis, excessive heat, flooding, etc. What's going on?

What kind of storm was it and why was it so bad? Did you survive it, or are you writing this answer from beyond the grave?

Purely theoretical, so please read all the constraints: you KNOW the winds to be consistent with an F0 Tornado (below 73 mph winds). Let's use 70 mph for the example. Clearly, this would be different than walking in 70 mph straight winds. Also, ignore the effects of debris. Assume the tornado is traveling on a clean, concrete surface. Another way to look at the question is what circular wind speed would it take to throw or lift a 175lb man. I know that a 70 mph straight wind would be difficult, but very possible to stand in. Thanks!!!

Is is because raindrops are a sphere? Can you change the shape of the reaction by dropping, say, a sugar cube....? What makes it round and expanding outward? Don't you love puddle bubbles?

When you look at the weather report (like online) and the wind speed/direction is: W at 8 mph, does it mean that the wind is going west, or that it is coming from the west?
