I just love those "snow days" and playing outside. Reminds me of the good ole' days - snowball fights, igloos, etc. It sucks after the snow melts though....I am not a winter person.

I cannot bear this weather anymore, and while the heat usually lasts until November/early December, when does it actually start raining or the clouds start blocking the sun around in these parts of the Bay Area? (San Pablo, near San Francisco.)

Does anyone know? I haven't actually kept track.

I understand lightning is an electric phenominom that is produced from two opposite charges. Can lightning or have lightning ever happened in a sunny day without the presence of clouds?

Hurricane season is here. I live on the MS Gulf Coast. We were badly affected by Katrina. During the past year there has been so many kind people who have come to help the people in the affected area. I just wanted to thank everyone. It really makes you feel good to see all the people that still care in the world. I didn't need the help thankfully but there are so many that did and still do.

Do you have a story to tell? Know of any kinds acts?

I have this notion that I should hose water on my roof when it gets really hot outside (like 100 degrees, Florida). I can almost see the heat coming out of the shingles. I know that evaporation creates cooling. So if I sprinkle water on the roof it should get cooler. Haven't tried it because I don't want to look like a dweeb to my neighbors.

Did you know that hurricane Katrina dropped 49 inches of rain on land in one spot? Yup, right over the Yucatán Peninsula. Hmmm what does 49 inches of rain translate into when you use the 10 inches of snow for each inch of rain? 490 inches of snow. Hmmm, that would be FOURTY FEET, give or take a few inches. Heavier snow which is typical of the moisture rich snow thrown off by a Nor'easter might give us say THIRTY FEET. I don't mean to scare anybody about this. NYC would suffer the hurricane but Upstate New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, lower Vermont and New Hampshire would receive the brunt of it all. They always do.

It's just a matter of time before the one that could produce that kind of weather pattern will manifest itself and sit on Long Island for a week, pumping all that moisture over the Northeast while dissolving the LI coastline. Just look at the shoreline. There are scallops up and down the coast all the way to Yucatán.

Small house boat on river trees all up and down bank? Probability of being sruck by lightning?

Our local meteorologist in Oklahoma City was pondering the possibility that tornado alley is migrating east to the midwest (places like Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky). They have had it bad the last couple of years, and we have had rather disappointing (if you're a weather enthusiast) storm seasons here in Oklahoma those two years. What is the possibility that tornado alley could really be moving, or is it more likely that this is just a natural cycle?

Every inch of rain roughly translates into 10 inches of snow.

After reviewing the weather patterns of the past recorded years, I can assume that a snow storm on the magnitude we have not seen in the United States is bound to happen in a short time. Likely 30-40 feet, possibly more over the course of a winter on the Eastern Seaboard of the US.

Houses crushed under the weight of 30 feet of snow would be everywhere.
Buildings we rely on to provide shelter would also be crushed because they were not built to withstand such pressure.
Communications, electricity, fuel delivery would cease because roads would become impassible.
Since the snow would most likely occur early in the season other snow would compact the problem as the season progresses.
Those who were not crushed would be suffocated as snow does not permit air to reach what it covers.

Anyone care to comment?
