What most would call global warming is "affecting" us today by causing mass paranoia in those that are undereducated in science and unable/unwilling to think for themselves or spend the time to look at the data themselves.
It is used as a tool by certain people to encourage others to adopt "greener" lifestyle choices. I agree with the outcome (people living more environmentally-aware lives), but I think it's a sham in the way they are convinced to do so.
I don't think it can be reversed. People won't want to believe they've been told a huge lie, whether or not it is proved or disproved.
Yes, our planet's clmate is getting warmer. Yes, the areal coverage of glaciers and sea ice is slowly decreasing. The climate system, at this point in time, is a puzzle that we still have alot more work to do on before we can solve it.
And remember, it just gets plain hot in many places in July and early August in the Northern Hemisphere for a couple of weeks. That's what we call "summer". That's not global warming--global warming is determined by long-term temperature averages.

There was a very good program on 60 minutes last night where the scientists pretty much said that even if we stopped all green house gas emissions global warming would still proceed and the polar ice caps are melting at an unstoppable rate. So global warming is inevitable, unstoppable and may herald the end of life as we know it. It will probably take several hundred or maybe thousands of years before real estate will be going at a premium price in Siberia or Alaska though. For today we are having record breaking heat globally that is putting tension on overworked, outdated power grids, causing loss of life, comfort and security. Polar bears and other aquatic dependent species may soon be extinct.

It can't be reversed since we aren't causing it in the first place.
If we had been heading steadily down in average temps over the last 5,000 years, then suddenly in 1900 done an about-face, I would be worried. However, we are coming out of a glacial period still, and warming is to be expected. Humans think too much of themselves, the Earth is doing just fine.
It's Monday morning and I'm sick of global warming, but I had to address the "mass extinction" issue:
We have a very slim record of species from a long time ago (long in a geological sense, like millions of years ago). Now, we have a huge catalog of species, in every kingdom of the living world. The point is, we DON'T KNOW how much extinction was taking place millions of years ago, and now that we do, people plot ridiculous graphs full of incomplete information! Passing it off as truth is disgusting science in my book! Damn Al Gore and his lies!

Global warming is a mixed issue. If you speak to a geologist they will tell you that throughout the lifespan of our planet there has never been a steady climate. We are definately affecting the climate with the amount of polution we generate but none of us will be around long enough to see if the temperature will spike down again.
I think we could make efforts to clean up the waste we produce and help the environment. I don't know, however, if it will result in lower temperatures in the coming decades.

Global warming causes storms to be more fierce because there is more energy for them to build up... warmer water makes hurricanes build faster and stronger...
Global warming causes more of the polar icecaps to melt.. raising the ocean water levels ... how much more do you think cities like Venice can handle?... 2 inches? a foot? a meter?
Global warming causes the frost line... to move up the mountains.. so winter snows melt sooner... causing drought conditions earlier in the year for some places that use mountain snow-melt for their water supplies.
