Medicine - October 2006

I received my daughter's date of immunisation for the "new" pneumonia, blood poisoning, ear infection etc. - It has apparently only been used successfully for 5 years in the USA. What do you think? I'm sceptical - I didn't know you could immunise against ear infections ... ? Those that have immunised their children and those that won't ... I'd be interested to hear your views.

Also, notwithstanding the guidelines of NAME (name.org), how much work and what type of work (really!) does the assistant do (for less pay) as opposed to the medical examiner/ forensic pathologist?

Have been to doctor. He gave me shot but said no more shots for 8 weeks. Also pain pills. What can I do besides pain pills to help> Bursitis is in hip. I work and am on my feet all day. I am 60 years old good health otherwise.

I was a breach baby, in fact, I was in the womb sideways. And rather than do a C-section, my FAMILY doctor delivered me naturally. Think he must have just yanked the hell out me because i was born with a compound fracture of the right arm and a black eye. But it gets better. They couldn't get me to breath for six minutes and it screwed up my pituitary gland in my brain. The pituitary gland secretes growth hormone and tells all the other glands what to do. As a result, I am short (5'5"), and I have to take both oral and injected steriods for the rest of my life (plus Thyroid meds). All this could have been prevented by a C-cection.
Didn't they know how to do them in 1953? Or were very few done or what?

The profit margin for pharmaceuticals must be amazing. Actually, I know the answer to that. I worked for a major pharmaceutical and know that their profit margin is consistently high. Over 20% in some cases. Amazingly high.

At one inch down and one inch to the left of my sternum there has been a pulsating sensation that I can see through my shirt, it is either a very fast pulsation or a random one. This has happened today three times all about an hour apart from each other. Right before this happened there was a painful sensation under my left shoulder blade for about twenty seconds. Saw a movie recently that had a bit of dialogue between a shrink and her legitimately stressed-out patient that went roughly -- _very_ roughly --

Doctor: What can I do to help you?
Patient: At this point, I need some Valium or something like that.
Doctor: I won't prescribe it. That's drug-seeking behaviour.

Absurd as it is, even the most rational sort of 'I think I am at the point where I am in need of medication' seems to be labelled "drug-seeking behaviour" by a lot of doctors. Are there formal definitions for it?
