The profit margin for pharmaceuticals must be amazing. Actually, I know the answer to that. I worked for a major pharmaceutical and know that their profit margin is consistently high. Over 20% in some cases. Amazingly high.

i agree, the costs are very high, but then again, if the companies didnt make money, they wouldnt exist, and they wouldnt make any new drugs. but i hate the high costs.

I've seen some reports of drugs selling for hundreds of dollars while the actual materials that make up the drug cost only pennies.

Unfortunately this is extremely twisted information. What isn't included in these statements is the amount of research and development that was done by doctors and other researchers to study, produce, test, and modify the drug. Also, consider the salaries of the production workers that run the machines to manufacture the pills (or drops, in your case). Then there's packaging, shipping, marketing. What good would it do you to produce a product if you don't tell anyone about it (marketing) or deliver it to retailers (shipping)?

Look at another situation...Why does Microsoft Office cost hundreds of dollars? The materials you receive (CD's) only cost about 50 cents. But there were many, many people working long hours to program, test, market, and write documentation for the product, and all of these people need to be compensated for their time. As I understand it, most workers at Microsoft (and the pharmaceutical companies) are paid employees, not volunteers.

what kind of eye drops is your grandmother using? for glaucoma? i am assuming so. if that's the case, most of the companies that produce those drugs have GREAT patient assistance programs.whatever drug she takes, look up the manufacturers name online and if she doesn't have insurance, they will send the drugs at no cost to her eye doctor's office. i used to do this for the patients at the dr's office i worked at before retiring.it does involve some paperwork, but the time invested is well worth it.
