it works VERY quickly!!! put your hand on a hot stove and see how fast you pull it away.....GREAT EXPERIMENT!! try it for yourself.....

your spinal cord is connected to your brain, extending out to your appendages from you spinal cord are nerves, the nerves constantly measure things in your body such as temperature, pressure or the chemical environment....when there's a change in any of these measurements from the normal, they send signals to your brain letting you know what's happening, allowing you to react....if you want an in-depth explanation of how the signals are sent.....search on the net....pretty complicated, but a start for your search could be something about "membrane potentials" or "action potentials" and even "osmolarity"

well there are lots of different nerve endings in your body. All of these are connected to your brain. When you touch something then the nerve endings in that part o your body send electrical impulses uop to your brain and then back down to the part of the body. This cycle is repeated continuously. However there is a system where if you touch something very hot or sharop then the impulses dont go up to your brain. They go to a point in your spnal column and it is a quicker journey so that it will get you r hand out of trouble more quickly.

Hope that has answered your question.

You get married, see what you've gotten yourself into, ask yourself, "What was I thinking?", then you are really nervous.

Yes, that was a sarcastic response, but it just came out.

Actually the system works through synapses throughout the neural network. There is no short answer to your question. Why don't you search out "nervous system" on the net?
