If not then why would the bones in my fingers grow from 5 years of manual labour? Or is it just the muscle in my fingers that have grown?

I remember my Bio teacher saying something about us needing lungs because we wouldn't be able to get enough o2 from diffusion through our skin alone...and also *random* in that Bond film where the woman found dead was painted gold, they said they couldn't paint her whole body gold because she'd (suffocate)? Don't know if that's at all related lol but...just answer the main question plz lol.
