I used a device called the ratzapper that delivers an electrical charge and electrocutes the rat when it steps on a metal plate thereby completing a circuit. Much more humane and less messy than the traditional traps. I simply removed him from the trap and threw him into the trash. If I remember correctly it cost about $15.

We used to use traps but now I find them to be inhumane. It could get trapped and not die right away and end up dying a slow, long painful death. I would say that it is best to use a trap that keeps them inside alive. That way, you can realease them somewhere else. I am pro-gun and pro-hunting but I think the same way about hunting. Trapping is cruel. And crappy hunters that take poor shots that only wound the animal are terrible. If you are going to shoot it, make sure you kill it on the first shot with a skillful shot. Make sure it dies a quick death. And use every part of the deer (meat, fur, etc.) Have respect for God's creatures. Wow, I really went off on a tangent there.

I've not had one fail, but it depends on how the animal entes the trap. It may have changed its mind at the last minute and ended up setting off the trap and got its leg caught.
The most humane thing would have been to shoot it. I don't like seeing animals suffer either, but if they become a hazard or a pest they have to be dealt with. You can always get a live trap.....trap the animal in it and then transport it far enough away that it be in the wild instead of around a city.

Normally I give little mices to my cat, and It will play for a couple of hours.
But for but Norvegian black rats (I found one of 45 cm !) I just throw them away, they are already half-dead for the poison in the trap. And the are so big that they really drag around normal mousetraps.

Just get a regular rat trap and use peanut butter, not cheese, to bait it. It never fails, and breaks their little necks instantly.

A steel bar breaks it's neck. no blood.
be careful when you set it (the trap). Release the pressure on the bar very slowly or you could wack your finger..
maybe even break it.
