Why is it that most species on earth such as humans need sleep while others do not?

Every Species needs rest in order to function properly. The only differance is that we have different sleep periods.

all species need sleep.
dolphins and whales have half the brain sleeping while the other half is making sure they come up to surface for air.

The mind needs to replenish itself and rest. The rest will reduce metabolic function.
