Hydrophilic meaning water loving....
Polar substances (partially charged substances) are hydrophilic.
Examples include
glucose, amino acids, Vitamins B & C
These substances can't pass through cell membranes directly as the inner membrane is made of fat (lipid). Hydrophilic molecules have to pass through protein channels or carriers.

In general, a polar, or charged molecule or part of a molecule that is able to form hydrogen bonds with water is hydrophilic. Ammonia, salts, sugars are all examples of hydrophilic compounds.
