Why the climate is cool in high altitudes despite we are nearer to Sun's heat?

The higher the altitude, the cooler the climate. As we fly above 30 thousand feet, we are nearer to sun by 30 thousand feet. The earth is scotched with Sun's heat. But the same sun is note effective in scotching the flight even though it goes near the Sun. The Rocket should melt, but does not. The mountains which are nearer to sun by a few thousand feet, but they are cool. Why this contoversy ?

What's a good math project for a college student?

I have a final project due tomorrow for my class, What Is Mathematics. I have to relate something to math in my own style, but I can't think of anything that's really interesting. I was thinking maybe it could do with food or something like that, but I'm open to any ideas. Once again, it's COLLEGE LEVEL, no nothing really easy please.

Last night on the Science Channel this guy was talking about the Twin Paradox?

He said that time goes slower, the faster your speed. A few minutes later he was talking about GPS stellites going 18,000 miles per hour, and sending an image to Earth. I was half asleep, but I could have sworn that he said that if the time was traveling slower for the satellite, then the image would be jumbled! Or he might have said that it is proof that time does travel slower when you travel faster. Which one is it?

If someone went to the moon?

And got a jar that was air tight and then opened it on the moon then trapped the air in that jar. Then they took that jar back to earth and opened it and sniffed it. would they be short of breath?

We know of the 4 dimensions of space & time...so what's the nature of the FIFTH?

The closest thing I can think of is the 5th comprising ALL alternative options that did not occur in reality. i.e.--if history didn't proceed in the way it did and took a significant "turn", (say JFK survived for example).
Any thoughts?
