He created the first bulb for practical use in homes in 1879. He didn't actually "invent" the light bulb. Others were working with primitive electric lighting for about 50 years before that, but none of those lights lasted very long and for the most part were not usable in homes.

In the 1880's I believe. The phonograph was 1876.
