Hydrogen is located at the top of column 1 on the periodic table, left or metal side, because it acts like a metal in that it likes to give away its outer electron. It does this more often than to take an extra electron and become a hydride.
I have seen old periodic tables where hydrogen is listed twice, top of column 1 and top of column 7 , the halogens ht take an electron to fill their outer ring.
It is not a metal in the sense of being a solid, hard, conductive, etc, but chemically it does react lke a metal, so is found in column 1, alkali metals.
