I've been really struggling with this question.
------
Let {[x_j,y_j]}_(j>=0) be a sequence of closed, bounded intervals in R, with x_j<=y_j for all j>=1.

Suppose that the intervals which make up this sequence are disjoint, i.e. [x_j,y_j]∩[x_k,y_k] = Ø for j≠k.

Is it possible that R=U_(k>=1) [x_k,y_k]?

Hint: What sort of subset in R must be then be formed by the endpoints U_(k>=1) {x_k,y_k}
---------------

Thank you so much!

This is an optimization problem in calculus.

An offshore oil well is 2 kilometers off the coast. The refinery is 4 kilometers down the coast. If laying pipe in the ocean is twice as expensive as on land, what path should the pipe follow in order to minimize the cost?

What are the steps to arrive at this answer and what is the final answer? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!

I have to create a vehicle that is propelled by Newton's 3rd Law. "For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction." Basically, something that makes the car go by being pushed against the wall. I've been thinking like a spring or something, but i think everyone's going to do that. Any ideas?
