1. During interphase:
G1: new daughter cell grows by adding cytoplasm and organelles; carries out normal cell functions
S: DNA replicates; only happens if cell is going to divide
G2: cell grows further to prepare for division

2. Cell division is necessary for:
growth: by adding more cells
development: by making new kinds of cells for different structural changes
replacement: making new cells to replace worn out, old cells
repair: making new cells to repair damaged tissue
