1. It is cheaper than prison.

2. It is clearly punitive. Many repeat offenders don't mind a spell in prison (the ex cons I've spoken to say prison wasn't so bad.)

3. It avoids the problem of separating mothers from their children

4. It is easier to compensate after false convictions (you can't replace the years lost in prison)

Of course it is not suitable in all cases but it could be compbined with incarceration.

I admit Bill Clinton supported Nafta but it was narrowly rejected by dems and STRONGLY supported by reps. The other trade agreements were always well supported by reps and well rejected by dems...THESE ARE THE FACTS FOLKS!

Earlier in the campaigns, I thought that the Republicans were just demonstrating how completely out of touch they were with the electorate. But, as the election draws near, it seems they are doing everything possible to alienate and outrage voters who might have been leaning toward their candidates.

Even in a forum as politically insignificant as Yahoo Answers, their supporters seem bent on going out of their way to present themselves and their cause in the worst possible light.

I thought the Democratic nomination of Walter Mondale was in indication of a giveaway election, but I've never seen anything like this!

Seems to me with Bush and his supporters in charge we're more likely headed for the dark ages. At least when Kennedy said "Let's go to the moon!!" he actually did something about it. Kennedy the "liberal" with a "liberal" congress did all that can you imagine?

I find it an insult that our government has been using fossil fuel as a source of revenue for years and NOW we are the ones who have to pay for global warming! where's all that revenue gone? and why wasn't some ringfenced to pay for the development of new environamentally safe fuel and renewable fuel?

Americans I meet, in the States as well as elsewhere, seem to be mostly decent sensible likable people. Yet some of them vote Republican. I see the Republicans sending troops to occupy other people's countries (Iraq, Afghanistan), supporting occupation (Israel's in Palestine), and at home cutting taxes to help the rich and doing little or nothing to help the poor, and opposing scientific progress like stem cell research from a place of prejudice.

I can understand the rich and Christian fundamentalists and other nutcases voting Republican, but what good do ordinary folk with common-sense and compassion see in the GOP?

to fight the war on terror???
I understand that some folks are only trying to help, but many, many others are 'speaking out of orafices that speech is not intended to flow from'.

In the movie 'Braveheart', Longshanks threw his son's gay lover out the window, for 'claiming' to understand the skills of warfare. Good idea? Maybe just wishful thinking?

Just a question from one vet to another.

Look I know that Jews suffered horribly during the second world war but so did other people. There was never any reason for us to start the border drawing that inevitably leads to the hatreds you see now. Putting the Shah in power was our second mistake; Ike did it out of the paranoia about communism in the 50's. Carter also made a mistake in allowing the Shah to seek medical treatment in the U,S.A. after he was overthrown. Why we didn't try to engage Iran and the other arab countries after that mistake is beyond me. Instead of seeking peace we befriended Saddam and then THAT blew up in our face. What a comedy of errors it would be if the result was not the horrific state of affairs we now face.

itsalways been the other way around. Democrats wise up, grow up and become Republicans.

Also why do democrats come on here claiming to be conservatives but advocate a liberal agenda? do they really think the rest of the world is as dumb as they are?

I was checking-out of a motel. Turned on the news and saw, what I thought to be a rehearsal or practice emergency response. The first plane had hit minutes earlier. It didn't take long to figure out that this was REAL. . ...........then.....the second plane hit. .. silence. . . . .. . . I was in shock !!!

Where were you ?
