It worked for Switzerland in two world wars.

The problem is that while the US claims to be neutral, it has consistently helped one side or another and then cried foul when we were attacked.

For example:
WWI. We were selling arms to the allies and not to the axis thus the German U-boats were sent to sink the supply ships such as the Lusitania.

WWII. The US was the sole supplier of oil and gas to Japan. When the US cut off all sales of oil and gas as sanctions for Japan's aggressive behavior, crippling their economy, it was rightfully considered an act of war in which Japan responded with the attack on Pearl Harbor.

9/11. We went and trained these terrorists to carry out warfare in the manner that they do now because we wanted them to kick the USSR out of the middle east. We were no more welcome there than the Russians and we all know what they did with the training we gave to them.

If you take actions which take sides in a dispute, you cannot claim to be neutral, and you shouldn't be surprised when you are getting attacked for helping the enemy because an ally of your enemy, is your enemy.

We need to stay out of other nations disputes and we definitely do not have the right to attack a nation that has done nothing to us nor poses any danger to us.
