Promises dim for the nation's poor 1 hour, 56 minutes ago

Illuminated by lights fit for a Hollywood movie set, President Bush stood in New Orleans' Jackson Square on Sept. 15 and tried to reassure Americans that the darkened and flood-ravaged city would be saved.

For that brief moment, domestic poverty shared the presidential spotlight. Bush acknowledged the dismal relief effort that Americans had witnessed on TV. Poor people who were unable or unwilling to evacuate the city were stranded on the roofs of their flooded homes or at the Louisiana Superdome and the city's convention center.

Bush said the region's deep, persistent poverty was rooted in the nation's "history of racial discrimination." He promised to confront this malady "with bold action."

But when the lights dimmed, so did the promise to make poverty and discrimination national priorities.

I went to MEPS 8 years ago and got permanently disqualified for my ears and hearing. However, a few months ago i talked to a recruiter which told me that it would be no problem getting me in. I was a little skeptical, but I lost 45 pounds and went to MEPS any ways. I passed all the test for the exception of the weight. I was 4 pounds over. The MEPS doctors told me that all i had to do was lose the weight and im in. the thing is when i went to the physical they didnt even look in my ears, they didnt look in my mouth, nor did they even check any of the hernia repairs and scars that i have on my stomach. i remember the first time i went to MEPS and the checked everything. Is this unusual? I mean, since i was permanently disqualified i would have thought they would have been all over me because of my ears. but they didnt even check them. so i guess if they told me that all i have to do is lose the four pounds and every thing else will take care of itself. Right? oristhereawayicouldfail?

She also brought in this square piece of rug, also with her. Is this widespread among appeasing liberals who think that nothing is worth a war?

How do israel expect to be left alone & to live in peace with the Arabs, while israel is still capturing Arab lands since 1967,israel dont have any right to be in these lands ,they r invaders,& as long as they r invading other ppls land ,israel will be targeted by the resistance forces of these lands like Hezb-ALAH in Lebanon & Hamas in Palastine,
So,if israel really have the will to live in peace ,they should get out of all these lands & give the palestinians all there rights ,& stop their cruel use of force (its very coward action to hit civilians&kids who r sheltering with fighters & smart bombs!!!)
So ,getting out of the land is the first step that should be done by israel ,
what do u think?

India - infected with terrorists of Pakistan.

And why is US having double standards when everybody knows pakistan is the heart of terror with the most deadliest terrorists being trained in its Madarsaas, they first formed Taliban under Osama and how ready to infect the UK and US, India being the obvious enemy because it is a democratic country and against terrorism.

Did it ever occur to people that money spent on immigrants and immigration (legal or not) is not "money well spent." Did it ever occur to anyone that, like war or not, money spent on it is validated? Please research the contrast between the economy and war before answering with a mal attitude.

I read that most of the people disagree with Bush's policy but everything keeps on going. He can't be reelected, but his presidency can end up before if the people really find that is not giving to them more than war and empty promises.
I wonder why Clinton had to bleed in public because of a personal " mistake" and public, political behavior that are not representing the will of the people have to be accepted. As a foreigner, not resident of the US, I would like to understand how it works the Freedom and the Public Opinion in these matters.
When an American Soldier dies for America, it does for the Government or for the American People.
What makes a country, the temporary Government or the People?

The deputy prime minister of palestine was kidnapped by the Israeli soldiers.. isnt that a lil bit too extreme dont you think for the Israeli government to do so just cos he is from Hamas. Isnt the ruling party of Palestine.. "Hamas" and that would also include the Prime Minister himself. Does that mean they are going to kidnap the prime minister too? Sounds a lil like a dictatorship to me dont u think, for a neighbouring country to kidnap all your leaders just cos they dont like your party.. even though it was elected by their ppl? What would they then do to this deputy prime minister? Would they use him as a bargain chip, or to blackmail the palestinian government.. or might they just brainwash him and let him go to rule palestine as an israeli puppet?

WOuld like ppl's opinion about this topic. dont lead the question astray pls.. decent answers only

.. sort out their own political and financial problems and make something worthwhile for themselves, instead of leeching on others. Do they think that we have been given what we have got? Britain has been built up over many generations of hard working people, many of whom saw little return for their efforts! It would be bad enough if they were decent people, but from what I've seen, and I've seen plenty, all we are getting are the dregs of their social structures!
