There are burglary dwelling and burglary non-dwelling. Day and night time burglaries. Many are opportunist - like when busy mums go out to collect kids from school and leave a downstairs window open.

A lot of burglars (small time as opposed to the really expensive big time) will go for easy stuff they see - TV - especially plasma - laptops and easily portable electricals - they seem to leave jewellry - probably because it is more traceable.

They LOVE taking car keys and then taking the car with them. Which some just use to get to the next burglary - and some get replated and sell for a few hundred quid.

A very common way of them getting in is through the uPVC front doors with the handles. Most people DO NOT LOCK them from the inside at night. It is SO EASY for would be burglars to pop something through the letterbox, hook the handle down and HEY PRESTO - they are in your house - whilst you sleep in bed. They probably will not come upstairs and are gone long before the morning.

So, LOCK UP securely at night. If you can lock your door from inside, DO IT. Leave the keys close to the door so you can get out in an emergency - but NOWHERE someone can reach them through the letterbox.

If you have a burglar alarm, USE IT - ALL THE TIME - part set it at night. Or think about having one fitted.

Oh, the motives - the are lazy and greedy and cannot be bothered to do a proper days work - let alone pay tax!

REMEMBER, LOCK UP. And if you have window locks USE THEM TOO. Make it as hard as you can for anyone to get into your house.

Theres aggrevated burglary, which is a burglary when violence is used, and a burglary which is forced entrance into a property to steal.

Im not exactly sure what the question was, but if you mean different kinds as in the different forms of theft (ie Theft, Burglary and Robbery) those are your different kinds! Theft is your plain stealing, taking without permission with intent to keep. Burglary as explained above, and Robbery is using the threat of violence to get what you wanted eg bank robbery. Difference between agg. burglary and Robbery is that there is no forced entry in robbery.

Day and Night.
First assumes you won't be there , second assumes you will.

Quick Cash.
Simple commonsense security will deter. Will take cash, camera, watch etc.
Motive = desperation or rarely greed.

House Burglary.
Enhanced security needed. Will take anything with resale value. Pre-planned with house and time in mind, have van.
Motive = Can make a living without working.

Heist.
Specialist security required.
Will take high value items they already know are there.
Motive = because they can.

At least that's how I classify break-ins to property.

legally there are different types of burglary (in the uk at least) and are determined by different criteria location (ie where was burgled- business premesis, home/dwellings) what happened during the burglary (was violence/fear of violence used) and if anything was actually taken (if not the crime is burglary with intent to steal.) The catagories also include the value of the goods taken.

As for the motive, the most obvious is poverty (which includes drugs in most cases.)

The difference between theft and robbery is the use of force to commit the crime, theft-no force- robbery-force was used- aggravated robbery-extreme to deadly force was used....burglary-means you gain illegal entry into a place to commit theft or assault, break into a residence = burglary of habitiation Motives can vary.....just like the crooks....from basic survival needs...(people looting at Wal Mart during storms) (for fun...teenage shoplifters) (for thrills, beer-runs, hold-ups at the 7-11) (ultragreed, bank robbery with hostages)

Motives? Last figures I heard were that over 3/4 of break-ins were motivated by drug habits. Crack and smack mostly.

They are mosty driven by the need to buy more drugs.

It would be different if someone really needed the money to buy food for their kids or something.
