Nah, we should just plain and simple institute the draft. The lib's will never leave because they are cowards and know when they've got it good.
Our 'volunteer' soldiers are being torn to shreds (and I don't mean by IED's) with all this constant deploying. Sure they agreed to serve in exchange for some benefits - but there's a reasonable limit you can expect from anyone. You don't run a good horse to death.
Also, the way things are going - such as offering citizenship shortcuts to immigrants who agree to serve - we will soon begin to develope a 'merit-based citizenship mentality' kind of like in that movie "Starship Troopers" where people had to earn their citizenship.
A US soldier can literally go from the midst of a hellish firefight in which he's using everything at hand to kill the enemy to survive - to being arrested for public intoxication in the USA within four days; right alongside his dipsnit brother-in-law who ain't got no job, never had one, and never will. It has happened! Is this right? Shouldn't the men and women of this country who are brave enough to put life and limb on the line VOLUNTARILY be given some higher esteem in the eyes of our system? That's the kind of issue you come up against when service is optional. It means the poor man serves, the rich man plays - the druggies party and the serviceman pays. It ain't right.

I don't think that would work. The majority of today's college students are liberal and because of college deferments, the majority of drafted men would be conservatives not enrolled in a educational institution.

We'll never get a draft for military service.
Charles Rangel (D, NY) tried that maneuver in 2003. When the Rs called the question, even Rangel didn't vote for his own resolution. It lost 402-2, both 'yes' vote were from Ds.
