I understand using it to prevent a dog from destroying things while you are gone, and I understand how it is used to housebreak the dog..but truly I see no point in doing it now dont get me wrong I am not insulting anyone who uses a crate, I just can't imagine how it would really be any different if you didnt use one at all... My dog chewed a few things as a pup but I taught him not to and provided him with his own toys which he has used instead of my things since he learned the difference which was about right after I got him.. he never chewed my shoes...and I left him often when he was young so that he would never get separation anxiety, he was housetrained in 2 days and did very well asking to go in or out sure he had accidents when I was gone but I used pee pads and he only went on them. So why bother to use a crate when you really don't need one and can teach your dog how to be behaved without ever using one? I want to hear why you think it is better to use a crate or not.

Anyone have one of these? Recommendations? I keep my house air conditioned but my dog is a consta-panter, always panting no matter how cool it is, so I'm worried I'm not keeping her cool enough...

my dog had a fleshy smallish button looking thing at the edge of her eyes. the vet said it was a hereditary problem. all of a sudden her eyes got white and eventually it had a phelgm like substance in the middle of her eye and it had a red spot and was bleeding. then it formed the same thing like the thing at the edge of her eye. anyone know any treatment? and what is that called? the vet doesn't know........

I have two dogs. I have a shih tzu named harley who is 4 years old. Before we got Maggie, he was king tut. He ruled the house. Now that we have Maggie, things have changed. She is about 90lbs and rules the house. Things are becoming worse because as she increases in size, the more she harasses harley. Harley will be walking in the kitchen and Maggie will just pounce on him and attack him. So now, Harley spends 3/4 of his time in his crate (its is open, he just goes in there himself and lays down). Harley is like an old fart, he just likes to eat and sleep. Whenever harley goes to walk to his bed or go to his dish, Maggie takes this an attacks him. She isn't aggressive and I know she is just playing, but I feel bad for harley. And I tap her on the butt with my hand or I'll whistle to get her attention, yet she will stop for a moment and then as soon as my back is turned, she will attack him again. Do you guys have any tips on what to do with Miss Maggie Mae?

My border collie mix is gone in a flash if he slips out the door, or manages to get off his leash, or slips out of the backyard when the gate opens. We're very careful with him because we know he runs off --so it doesn't happen that often.

I see other people who can keep their dog unrestrained and it doesn't go too far. Our lab mix puppy doesn't seem to want to run like Rufus (the collie) but because of Rufus we're hesitant to give her much freedom.

Does anyone know what training techniques can be used to keep the dogs close?

Please don't give me any of those answers that he runs off because he doesn't like us -- I know it's not that -- he just puts his nose to the ground and takes off to investigate, he's always thrilled to be back home.

Thanks!

We adopted a 5 or 6 month old Pointer/Lab mix. He's now probably about 7 months.. a very good dog, good with the kids, a bit exciteable at times as expected...and has been OK (not great) with going into his crate when we're out of the house for a couple of hours each to go shopping or whatever. But this morning, my wife called me and said she couldn't move the dog, who was on the floor in another room...and ended up having to put the leash on him and drag/coax him outside, with no chace of manipulating him into his crate. I suspect he wasn't crate trained before we adopted him. He was given to the humane society a couple of weeks before we got him in early July. My question is, although I've been online, looking for a 'plan of action' regarding crate training, almost all of the one's I've come across talk about puppies and how to make them comfortable, etc.. and how it's good for housebreaking and so forth (our dog is housebroken already). Any suggestions would be appreciated.thx

My Australian Shepherd keeps getting in my trash while I'm away. I've thought about getting a trash can with a lid, but she's very strong, not to mention smart. I really think she's doing this because she's angry with me for being away. (She gets PLENTY of dog food.) I've also thought about spraying some ammonia in the trash to deter her. Do you think this will work? Any other ideas would be appreciated. Thank you.

I think that the Chow has gotten a bad name. I have been raised around chows all my life and I have never expericenced this meaness that a lot of people talk about. Righ now my fiance and I have a 9 month old chow that is just as sweet as she can be. She is great with children, she does not get aggressive and she loves to play. I think if you are a good owner and you are expericenced in training there is no reason why your Chow swhould be mean.

I am planning on getting a Shih Tzu. I was wondering how much they shed, how much they bark, general health problems, do they get along with cats, are they lap dogs, etc.

Thanks in advance!
