Hi.......there are many breeds of small dogs ...... but what you ask is not realistic ( you say your a nurse ) with any breed of dog are any animal warm are cold blooded there is always the risk factor they may get sick ( like humans ) You know about preventive medicine right like drink your milk , eat you vegetables etc. etc.
take your medicines as prescribed and so on . As a nurse you should know these things... im sure you do .
> my point is all of the above apply to all animals .
* there is no such thing as a low maintance dog of any breed
>>> your pet should remain healthy as long as you the pet owner
takes good care of him/her .. good diet , plenty of freash water,
regular visits to the Vet to maintain good health.
Now if you cannot afford good care of any pet then you should not have a pet . ( but a Register Nurse makes a pretty good salary
so affording to care for a pet a little dog should be no problem.)
right?

>>> you want low maintance get a robot dog * remember you still have to change the batteries

small dogs ... Miniture Dashund , Shih Tzu , Chihuahua , Jack Russel Terriers, Toy Poddles, Toy Pinchers etc. etc.

Go to www.akc.org for a starting point & check out the 'toy breed group'. Find ones that interest you & meet your needs, then do further research: talk to a vet, go to a breed club meeting if possible, talk to owners of the breed at a dog park, etc. Only you can determine which breed suits your lifestyle best. As far as the "keeping it friendly": socialize it as much as possible - i.e. take it to puppy kindergarten & other obedience classes, go to dog parks (once it is fully vaccinated), & NEVER be the typical small dog owner that picks up the dog the minute another dog approaches it &/or carries it everywhere. This too common routine is what makes small dogs snippy, over-protective & anti-social, FYI. Oh, and about the shots: unless you are a veterinarian, leave it to the pros, please. Your dog could have health issues that can only be diagnosed & treated by someone with the training & knowledge a vet has. I mean, I know how to put air in the tires of a car, but I don't think that makes me a certified mechanic!

Pugs are nice, but have many potential problems if you are not getting it from a good breeder. Always see the parents before buying one. They are a high energy dog too. And they shed like the dickens. But, they are so sweet and strong, usually. You can take them for walks and kids can play with them without fear of them being hurt.

I've had both of these breeds so I am talking from experience.

Pomerania ms are sweet and much smaller. Although their hair is longer, they don't shed half as much as a pug does. They blow their coats once a year, and its for a short period. All dogs do this, you just have to brush them. They are easy to carry in your arms and will sleep very quietly on your bed at night. I love all dogs, small and large!

Go for a cat instead. They can be so much more loving...not NEARLY as messy...and they won't get very big.
My 6 year old daughter wouldn't part with her Thumper for the world! He's the most affectionate kitty...acts like a darn dog!

A Boston Terrier is a good breed. Very friendly and cute too. The only health problems that Bostons seem to have is that they prone to allergies.

I had a mini dachsund and she was awesome. I didn't want the whole grooming thing to deal with, so I got a sleek little short-haired red weenie dog.

Look at the small terrier breeds. They are lots of fun. Miniature Schnauzers are what I have.
