I would pick a dog over a cat because you can do many more things with a dog. But you have a lot more responsiblities. Cats normally like to lay around the house. Dogs, you have to take them out every few hours, with cats all you have to do is change their litter (which can be gross, sometimes). You do have to feed both a cat and a dog everyday so neither is easier when it comes to feeding. So if you are thinking of a pet that is more playful, a dog is the best. But if you are thinkig of a calm pet, a cat is best. Hope this helps!

Dogs need to be walked and if you like doing that with a little plastic bag in your hand, you will do fine. Dog will let you know when its time for that walk i.e early morning , very late at night. They have a routine if you want to sleep in and its past when it normally goes for its walk get ready for a " surprise". If you have a yard, then open the door and worry about it later.
Cats are very low maintenance but you cannot play fetch or run in the park. Cats really don't offer much in the security department i.e. robbers , muggers. I have both, I also have plenty of patience and tolerance. I do not think one is better than the other, it depends on what you are looking for. They both make great companions.

CG,
That all depends upon your needs, environment, and time availability. Cats, as you probably already know, are independent and pretty much self-sufficient. You keep them fed, watered, and have a clean litter box for them, and they can stay pretty content. What I'm trying to say here is that you can still have a relatively "normal" life and have the benefits of a pet when you come home.
Dogs, on the other hand, are more dependent upon their owner. They are social beasts and truly need the companionship of their owners. They don't do well staying at home for hours at a time all alone. That's when they can become neurotic and tear your house apart.
Both are wonderful pets, but it's your personal life that sort of dictates the direction your needing to take. Pets are not accessories or just purchases: They are long-term commitments.

Hope this helps.

I think whether a dog is a better pet than a cat depends on each person. I like both myself, but cats are easier because you dont have to house break them and you can leave them alone for the day and dont have to worry about them going in the house!

Yes...dogs are much better company..and if you get a toy or small breed you can "litter train" it like a cat and not have the problem of having to walk it a few times a day or the need for a yard...we live in a loft in downtown STL and have a toy fox terrier...enables us to have the dog without the extra "work" that goes with a dog vs a cat!

.A dog is always a good company, but requires more attention than a cat. If you are not a very busy person, a dog is the perfect pet. Though cats are easier to deal with

a lot of cats hhave an independant personality, they will sit on your lap only when you want them to, dogs on the other hand have a deeper need for human contact
Cats are also easier to care for, just give them food and water, and change the litter box. Dogs need the food and water, but need daily walks, chew toys and social interaction. My 2 dogs are as much work as my 2 daughters. But I love having them around, our 2 cats are pretty much scenary at my house. They come and go but noone really cares ( us or the cats).

My short answer is yes, but you should to some more research and decide.

I prefer dogs, but they are a lot of work and need a lot of attention. It's kind of like having a toddler all the time. I'm not a cat fan, but for selfsufficient -a cat is a good way to go. They don't seem to need the attentions and reasurrance a dog does.

I don't think dogs should be pets at all...horrible creatures. Of course, even though cats are a little better, still don't like them much. I vote for rocks! The perfect pet.
