If you have a good relationship with the people next door, you could ask them how they feel about this, and ask if they would be cooperative in allowing your dog (puppy) to come a visit their child, so that he will befriend it and be protective of it, rather than the child being a stranger..
if you don't have a good working relationship with the neighbor, then I would think that another breed would be best..
Be sure to get your Spaniel from a breeder who's lineage is OFA certified...

Well, personally I definitely say a rottweiler. I have one and I have raised them all of my life. It will be fine with a 3 year old as long as you socialize them. Rottweilers have such bad reputations. They are the most laid back dog. Mine thinks she is a lap dog. They are the biggest babies but will protect if they need to. Definitely go with a rottweiler. Trust me you wont regret it.

that depends. do you have enough time to devote to training a puppy such as a rott? It's good that you're concerned about this. Since you actually do care, I would just make sure I took the pup to obedience classes. I personally prefer the big dogs, but the britneys are also so cute!
