Hi : you have heard the old saying
"You cant teach a old dog new tricks" See................
dogs are a creature of habit . you can teach your dog but it may take a little longer then if your dog was younger.
Your dog is not old...but a adult dog .
So be patience , nice , most of all be repetitive.
those Dobermans are smart .....as they (all dogs) get older
they tend to take longer to teach new tricks.

Perhaps you can try taking him out to releive himself on a leash. When he begins the digging actions, gently tug on the leash and walk to another spot (don't say anything). When he digs again, tug the leash again and move to another spot (don't say anything). Eventually, he'll have to "go" so bad he'll stop the digging attempts and just go. Then make a big deal out of it and offer him a treat, telling him he's a good boy.

I think that's a good thing since it saves you the trouble of having to clean up his mess, just be sure to lead him to a spot where he can dig and not ruin any of your flowers.

Take him to a spot where it is ok if he digs. Make sure you take him there everytime. Then praise him for going there

Use Dog Away this will repel him from your garden.

Call him over to you and praise him when he comes. A small treat won't hurt either.
