I have an established 50-gallon aquarium. Ammonia or nitrite levels have never been present, and nitrates are generally between 1-5 ppm. In addition to the presence of nitrates and moderate light, my tap water also has high concentration of phosphorus, resulting in green water formation within a day of water changes.

Is there any real solution to this, besides the stop-gap measures of light deprivation or the drastic adoption of R/O filtration? Are micron cartridges or diatom filters any good, or simply quick fixes? Thanks so much!

I have had 2 female rats for almost a year now. They are in a large cage and have always gotten along with each other. One is very friendly and the other has always been very shy. Recently, within the past 2 days they have begun fighting. The shy one will jump on the other and she will start squeaking like crazy. If it only happened once a day I would be ok with it, but it seems like she never lets her have a moments peace. And I can hear the squeaking all the way in the other room. I took the one out to hold her tonight and I noticed her ears are all scratched up and a little bloody. No big wounds, but still.... Right after I put her back the other jumped on her again. So I dug out an aquarium for the night and put the troublemaker in it. Will I be able to put them back together or is she always going to be mean? They both seemed stressed when I seperated them, but I figured it was for the best. Has anyone been through this before? Thanks.

Mine are:
Faves
1. Mutt: any dog rescued from a shelter is an awesome dog. Go rescue one today!
2. Leonberger: big, beautiful, and very gentle and kind. They also don't slobber like St Bernards do.
3. St Bernard: same reasons as the Leo, except that St Bernards slobber everywhere.
4. Pitbull: always happy, fun, and energetic (if it's raised right).
5. Pug: full of energy, happy, friendly, fun, crazy!
Least Faves
1. Chow Chow: mean, nasty; get attached to one or a few people and hate everyone else. I've been bitten by two dogs - both Chows.
2. Weimaraner: stupid, hyper, and full of issues like separation anxiety, etc.
3. Greyhound: same as Weims, except they're lazy instead of hyper.
4. Chihuahua: usually very nasty to strangers (especially veterinary staff).
5. Yorkshire Terrier: I'm sorry I know everyone loves them but I think they're so ugly.
There are exceptions to all rules - and I have liked and disliked dogs of every breed, including those listed here.

We just had some folks here in the Brain from the NY SPCA, which runs a no-kill (they house the pets until they're adopted, rather than euthanizing them after a certain period of time) shelter here in Manhattan. This is what they wanted to hear about from all of you.

My cat is just over a year old - female and spayed. She is really aloof. I have never had a cat so uninterested before. She doesn't like to sit on anyone's lap, and if you stroke her more than a couple of times, she bites you, even though she was purring and seeming to enjoy it. She doesn't come when you call her over. She brushes up to your legs when she wants feeding, but that's about it.

Is there anything I can do to encourage her to be a bit more friendly, or is this it?

My fiancee and I will be leaving to study in China soon, and even though she hasn't said anything, I know she will miss our cat dearly, and I know that she will be extremely worried by the idea that our pet would forget us while we were gone. It would just break our hearts if we came back from China and found out that our cat had already moved on and "adopted" my fiancee's parents as her new owners. I tried searching about this question online, but I only brought up results about owners and pets being separated by Hurricane Katrina. Does anyone have any firsthand knowledge about this? If not, could anyone point me to a helpful resource where I could find the answer?
