Try this: on a day off start getting ready to leave, get your keys, coat, purse, whatever you usually take with you, then sit on the couch for 10 minutes, then put all your stuff away, wait 1/2 hour then do it again. Every so often when you gather your stuff go outside, wait 10 or 20 seconds (vary time gone each time you go out) then come back in again. The object is for him to never know when you are leaving and for how long you will be gone. When you leave, give him a toy that dispenses treats-he can only have this toy when you leave him. Consider getting 2 different toys if he's really hyper.
Don't make a big deal out of leaving or coming home. If you are excited and clingy, he will be too.
Obedience training will give him more confidence in himself and the two of you Quality Time together.
Last, consider doggie day care. Facilities are springing up that offer play time during the day. The ultimate cure!! Hope this helps.

Give him a kong or a hollow marrow bone stuffed with peanut butter, soft cheese or even squashed up slice of bread. He'll be too buzy working that out to notice you leaving- worked for my sis's corgis.
If he's REALLY bad there are medications.

Oh PS don't make a big fuss about leaving & if you can "practice" this bone thing it's be good. Give him one leave & come back in like a minute so he see you DO come back and soon sometimes

A couple things. First of all, just leave. Don't coddle him, and explain where you're going and make a production out of it. Just go.

Alternately, it's good to provide a diversion. With my dog, I hid treats all over my bedroom, and locked him out of the room. Then, sneaking out of the room through the bathroom, I left the house. It only took a minute for the dog to figure out that the treats were unattended, and off he went. We did this for weeks, and he fell for it every time and was awarded with a daily easter-style treat. Pretty soon, me leaving was just another game we played.

Try leaving a radio on or the T.V. When you get back home, be sure to acknowledge your pet. For anyone with pets-all pets want to please thier owners and feel accepted. Be sure to acknowledge each pet individually when leaving and when returning home. At feeding time or when letting animals out or for walks, remember that each animal is different and they each have specific needs. Try to adress those needs and you will have a happier, healthier pet!

The best thing in the world to do is get him a companion. Another dog to play with would keep him very happy.

Nothing. Just let him whine and get it out of his system so he won't do it again. Don't come back for it when it whines because it will only encourage it to whine some more!

Find a toy that he likes, and only give him that toy when you leave and take it away from him when you return and keep it out of sight till you leave again. You should have two sets of toys for him and change them daily, making sure you put todays out of his sight til tommorrow.

when you leave & when you come in - do not fuss over the dog at all - do not even pay any attention to it until it calms down - it will eventually stop - but it will take time & patience

You need to occupy your dog, I suggest some type of chew. It will keep him occupied for a while after you are gone.
