Recently we had a pretty widespread power outage in Seattle. To my suprise and delight, my gas fireplace worked just fine. This seemed like a Christmas miracle because the fireplace turns on and off with an electric switch. I looked for a battery or something and didn't see anything that resembled a battery. But I flicked the switch on and off and the fireplace responded completely normally. Can anyone explain how this works?

I purchased a town house in sept 2006. Ever since there is a gradually worsening problem.
After a shower the bathroom floor waste stinks.(Upstairs). also there is a horrible stink in my Kitchen(downstairs) during rainy weather, or after I have used washing machine.
When the wash is letting out water into the laundry tub, it flows out of the tub fine, but it comes up the floor waste of the laundry, sometimes about 1/2 a bucket full, and this once contained some rubble !!!!
Help, I am not flush with money, and I will repay any advice by applying my 25 years of nursing experience to the respondent, it certainly doesn't help me here!!!

I just bought a house that has a sump pump (which is new to us)and when we are there we can see clear water pouring into my sump pump basin all the time (constant). which causes the sump pump to come on every 3-5 min. Is this to excessive or is that just how it is. My house is 10 years old and it sits on a hill but my basment of course is partly under ground. We also have a spetic system. But we arn't living there yet so it hasnt had much use yet. We also have city water I was thinking that the water pipe might be leaking somwhere befor the water meater, but i dont know. What can we do? Please help?

I'm a first time and last time buyer of a Hampton Bay Fan. I bought a Redington IV fan about 6 months ago and it just stopped working. No great service from Hampton either. They want me to spend $45 on a transformer and of course its not covered under warranty. Did anyone else have trouble with these fans? I'm sticking with Hunters Fans. In 14 years in this house I never had a problem with all 6 fans.

Recently moved into ths house and have had the heating on as well as the hot water. I've recently noticed that the central heating pump (Grundfoss) is running all the time. The only way to stop the pump is to switch the whole system off. Other that that it is all working perfectly, heating working when I need it in every room and loads of hot water. Just this pump running that is keeping me awake at night.

I am looking to purchase a MIG Welder for my boyfriend for his birthday. He is a professional welder now, but wants to be able to do fun projects and odd jobs in his free time. He will possible use it for anything from making lawn sculptures to fixing up his car.

Wondering what the best brands are out there, what he will need to be able to do some welding in a home shop, and which stores to purchase from (located in the Toronto, Ontario area)?

The bulbs in the ceiling light fixture in my room went out, and we can't get the cover off to replace them!

It won't push in, it won't unscrew. The ring around it won't budge. It's hard glass and won't push in or give. There are no screws to unscrew.

Please help!

Below are two photos of the fixture. Thanks!
