If it is a lot of glue, then use coarse sand paper first. If a little scrape it off first then sand as normal. If the glue is contact adhesive, you are not going to want to sand unless you have an unlimited supply of sand paper.

Use a coarse # 2 or #4 grit paper first. Then use a medium grit like 60 grit.Then use your fine grit paper to finish. PS make sure the 60 grit removes the cuts from the coarse paper before you use the fine paper.
