i have an iron with a retractable cord, and lately it retracts but doesn't lock....as in when you pull the cord out, it automatically tries to pull back in. is there any way to fix this? or does it just mean that my iron is shot and it's time for a new one?

The wind unwind pard of the cord works with a tension plate with small stopping plates. The new ones that are plastic wear and break Unlike the old metal ones that would last almost forever. Most of the time it is best to get something new.

Pull the cord out and tie it in a knot as close to the iron as you can. Now you do not have to worry about it retracting and being a nuisance as you iron.

I have a Phillips Retro steam iron and it has a rotating on/off temperature selector. This dial acts as the on/off switch. It also has an automatic shut-off that turns the iron off after about 30 minutes whether it's being used or not. Most steam irons have a rotating dial to turn them on/off. Of course, I can only account for those I've used. Older irons, steam or not, had a "lever" that moved in a semi-circle to adjust temperature. I also have one of those and it's just over 25 years old.

You better replace it because you don't have the sense to wrap electrical tape around the cord to keep it out. don't knot the cord.
