Maintenance & Repairs - January 2007

We called our landlord before xmas and 5/6 times after. She didnt call back untill we said we could take legal action.
The mold is coming from the bottom right corner and is only in that corner. Red, green and black mold is allover that side about 2-3feet up.
Our landlord says its our fault because we dont have the heater up to 65+ and not letting enuff air in. We havent had any mold anywhere else and dont even have mildew in our bathroom.
I am scared for my childrens health and I dont know if we should take legal action if we are made to pay for the fixing.
We are, however, going to take pictures to keep just incase.
What do you people think?

I have a few chips in my ceramic floor tile. It's a light natural color tile, so the chipped part is dark and noticeable. Is there anything that you can put in the chips to cover them up?

I have a Stanley screw driven garage door opener and it won't open. It will go down just fine, but when I try to open it, it will only open a few inches. I tried adjusting the open force a little bit, but that didn't help. Can anybody help me?

The house is 100 years old, and the current soil pipe is made from cast iron, I believe. We're afraid that we may end up tearing up walls in our house to replace with PVC. Is there any easier, less expensive way to fix this problem?

I just recently replaced all the switches and outlets in my home. Everything is working fine, however, there are two three-way switches that I replaced. They control a light in the basement. Since replacing them, they do not function properly. I can turn the light on and off from one location, but not off from the other, and vice-versa. Is this a wiring problem? Should both switches be ground? Please Help!

We have an "A+2000 Permanent Electrostatic Air Filter" that I've just washed, but now I'm not sure if I have to let it dry before I can put it back in the furnace.
Anyone have experience with this? Can't find any info on their site...
Thanks!

I am seriously thinking about building a house. It's not going to be a mansion or a shack, but somewhere in between that's comfortable and that I can call my own. What are the steps in building my own house?

During the holidays I turned off my water heater while I was on vacation. Since I got back it now periodically goes out when I turn the hot water on (especially when getting ready for a shower) and won't come back on for 20-30min. This has never happened before. Do you think this glitch might have been caused by staying off over the holidays?

One son moved out and other wants to move into basement. Naturally after a few years, the painted walls have some spots that need to be taken care of and just a general cleaning. Want to clean the area but not sure how to with the paint he originally used which was Ralph Lauren faux suede paint with a gritty type of finish.

Is it true that no matter what you have your heater set on it wont increase your bill. Meaning if I have my heater set on 70 once the house heats to 70 the heater will not kick on more to maintain the temputure of 70 as apposed to if its on say 74?

Or will it actually increase my bill if I set the heat at 74 will it have to kick on more to maintain the temp of 74 as apposed to 70?

Hope this didnt confuse you. I have mine set on 70 and live in a large home my kids say its a little chilly. So my husband told me to turn the heat up to 72-74 but with our monthly bill already running 100 dollars I dont want it to increase drasticly will setting the temp higher make a huge differance in our heating bill?
