Garden & Landscape - December 2006

I live in th southeast corner of Washington. In the fall I divided several large clumps of Iris. (the large type - not sure of name). Before I could finish replanting them all we had an unexpected early cold snap. It hasn't warmed up past freezing much. Currently they are loosely grouped in between several layers of newspaper, in a cardboard box and in the house. Will they survive until the spring? Should I store them in the unheated basement? What can you tell me? Thanks for your time.

One of my gardening clients wants some; I've got seed from the speciman she likes but want to get it right. I'm still a greenhorn in the nurseryman bisiness.

I cut through our next-door graveyard to get to our house from the road through a gap in the hedge. Are we allowed to do this?

We have three 2 year old blackberry bushes in our yard. A few of the shoots have grown about 4 feet, where the others are shorter. Should I be trimming these in the fall? And if so, to what height??

I LOVE Gerberas... but whenever we try to grow them, they always turn far more limp looking and droopier, and the colours aren't as vibrant as the ones you see in the shops. why is this so?? are there any particular types of Gerberas i should look out for? and when is the right time to plant seeds for them??

Is there any way I can tape/glue it back to the plant and it will still survive? They are the only flowers on the orchid. At the moment it is sitting in water.

I bought a variety of them in small plastic pots (1.5 inch high) from the nursery (warm and shady) and placed them in my office (airconditioned with 9-5 lighting). Like cactus they don't need much water and the lady only said a teaspoon of water once a week and they'll be happy but mine just grew upwards!!

Help, I just want them to be small and cute..

My parents are wanting to buy a house that have three oak trees on the land. The problem is, a lot of realtors told my parents that buying a house that has oak trees can be a bad thing. Something about overgrowth and uprooting the house (Exaggeration of course). Plus, they don't like how the oak trees look anyways.

So my question is, is it legal to get them removed? I live in the state of California and I have tried looking for the laws regarding oak trees but I couldn't find any. They aren't that big and removing them shouldn't be that big of a problem, but I was just curious on what actions my parents have to take to have the oak trees removed.
Thanks~
