I've had a banana tree and I've taken care of many. I have never heard of the fiber being used for anything. In Central America they throw the leaves (that make up the trunk) on the ground for fertilizer. If they had another use I think they would have figured it out by now.

On a personal note, when I have cut and pruned my banana the fiber didn't seem all that strong.

Yes, banana fibre can be used for making paper. In fact there is a factory being set up in Queensland, Australia to do this.
