Decorating & Remodeling - July 2006

Due to allergy issues, we had to pull up carpets in our 80 year old house. Like many older houses, the hardwood is only stained around the perimeter, the center is bare (where an area rug would be) We need to avoid large area rugs, and the bare area is fairly large. We like the rustic look, and don't really want to sand. There are some varnish marks on the stained areas that will need to be cleaned. We also have an infant that crawls- parts of the floor are sort of rough. We have a limited budget, so can't call in the professionals.

Now what?

what really gets on my nerves is usually some over camp interior designer going into a bathroom and having a fit of the vapours cos the house has an advacado bathroom suite conviently forgetting a similar person was saying ten years ago that a green bathroom [advacado] in designer speak was the thing 2 have, So rip out all that white stuff and replace it with advacado So if u must rip out your advacado suite keep it in storage .For a few years then you can re- use it so therefore saving money ! .Or better still stop making make over shows PLEASE !

The walls currently get very dirty thanks to dog and children. I want to put up a dado rail and paint the wall beneath it a darker colour but really want a tough wearing paint I can wash down weekly.

I have a medium sized bedroom. It is very "hard" and un-inviting and i can't relax in it. I want to change it so that i can relax and enjoy it, but i don't have a lot of money to spend on it. I have tan walls that i can't repaint. My bedspread is brown and black. I want to incorperate greens into my room because i want it to have an earthy feel without it being un-relaxing. I have two dressers and a desk in my room. How can i rearrange and accesorize my room so that it is more inviting and relaxing?

Purely theoretical question! If a UK building has been demolished, but you were to rebuild an exact replica (same construction method etc.) on the same site with no external differences, would planning permission be necessary?
