Hi Ian. Good for you. Congrat's on your new place. Start with your necessities. KITCHEN; Pots & Pans, dish'e, silverware, glasses and cooking utinsils. Bathroom, Toilet paper, soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrush, towels, face cloths and cleaning supplies. LIVING ROOM, chair, coffee table, couch & tv. BEDROOM, Bed, sheets, pillows, dresser, small table lamp and small bedside table. That should get you started. Don't forget you will need curtains. Don't overspend. Try finding a lot of these things in local consignment or thrift shops. You might want to invest in a microwave too.

ok, some of you need to reread the question, he is asking "what" he needs to buy for his first apartment, not that he is buying the apartment. Ian there are many websites that contain list of essential item you will need. When I got my first apartment all i had was my bed, computer and desk, trunk, dresser, tv, and some dishes for the kitchen. Over the past couple of months I have accumulated furniture for my living room and other various item. many of us think that we need more than that, just don't go broke trying to buy everything you want in your apartment, take your time. The main items you need is a bed and tv. if you can afford more than go ahead and buy living room furniture. if not, then buy a little at a time.

Buying everything you need will take you to the poor house quick! Get only what you NEED now and buy the rest as you need it.
To start, you need a bed, bedding, towels, toilet paper, somewhere to sit for eating and reading, a table would be nice, food, dishes, flatware, a sauce pan and lid, a skillet and lid, kitchen towels, hot pads, an alarm clock and a lamp or two.
Each payday go out and buy what you found you needed most the week before. Soon you'll have more than you need!

You need a pull out bed. You need a dresser that can double as a bar. You need appliances. You definitely need a toaster-oven. Yes, the toaster-oven will be your best friend.
Good luck with everything!
