The chimney is connected to an Aga (range) type stove. However, it has been built almost perpendicular and is below the roofline of the house. Sadly, both of these are unchangable. I've been reading about cowls that prevent downdraft but I'm concerned how well these work in reality...does anyone have any experience with these (do they prevent updraft much)?

Are they any other methods of preventing this downdraft? It was not present in light wind conditions but in a recent strong/gale wind, lots of smoke was blown into the kitchen...

Any help/suggestions/etc would be greatly appreciated!

I want to bring some bright colors into my bedroom. I rent, so painting is out. The walls are an ivory color and my bedroom furniture is a dark wood color. My bedrooms set is really bland, and I'm thinking i should buy a new comforter and sheets to wake up the room. I don't want it to be too girly or so bright that it is overpowering/outlandish, and I would like it to be modern -- not childish. I'm new to decorating and in my 20's.. Any suggestions for colors, design, and how to do this without spending a fortune would be greatly appreciated!

My indoor range (and oven) use propane, but it always leaves a black film on all of my pots and pans. What is causing this and how can I fix it? We don't ever have problems with pans in the oven, but the grills in the oven end up covered with the black film as well. If you need more details, ask. Any advice would be much appreciated.

I live in a split level home. It contains a basement, and three other stages to the house; The bottom stage (above the basement) being more closed off than the two upper stages. This bottom stage is significantly warmer (by about 8° F) than the two top floors. Since the thermostat is on the middle stage, the two upper levels heat comfortably and the bottom level is very hot.

As far as I know the insulation on the walls are the same on all levels, so I imagine it's the windows. Should I concentrate more on insulating the upper level greater or more on the power of the heating unit on the bottom level? I'm considering the possibility that it's just busted because I believe the upper levels are insulated well.

Okay, horticulturists and master gardener extraordinaires, I oversee management of a (100 plant) rose garden that is in the shape of an octagon. The center of the octagon has a pool with a fountain, but this is irrelevant. The beds outline the octagon and measure approx. 4' wide by 20+ feet long as they bend themselves around the perimeter of the shape. The garden has a very formal feel to it and it showcases an analogous color scheme of purples, reds, (and gray) shrub, floribunda, grandiflora, and rugosa roses with a center bed (around the fountain) planted with Lavandin, Sedum spp., annuals, etc. to compliment the roses. Okay, so can you picture it yet? Anyway.. I'm looking for a plant that can tolerate zone 5-6, somewhat dry conditions, and makes a very neat and tidy border along the bed lines. So far I've thought the following may work: Teucreum spp., Thymus vulgaris 'Rose Scented' (how Disney World), and Santolina spp., etc.Any amazing ideas? Thanks for your help in advance

I am considering getting a new carpet remnant for my living room (over my hardwood). I got one two years ago, but EVERYONE walks on it with their shoes on, and now it looks gross. How can I politely get people especially with snowy or wet shoes to not ruin my carpet?

OUr house is soooooooooo dry. I have a humidity detector and our humidity is only at 24%. I know ideal is 50% and 30% being the lowest. Do you like your whole house humidifier? From what i hear they are great, because you don't have to clean them and they turn off before you get too much humidity. Do you like it? Did your heating company put it in? How much does it cost?

The room is about 10x13 and I have electric baseboard heat, just pulled a 6 footer out or there looking to replace it with a newer one. IS this the size I need for that area? Also, looking to go with a hydronic baseboard, I heard they are much more efficient, is that true? Thanks

The lights went all funny, then there was a really weird noise following by a kind of popping noise, then the oven was on fire. My step dad thinks it was the heating element but he is, uhm... very much not a handy man, so I don't know if I should trust that. Does anyone know what it might be, or if it can be fixed? The oven is just over a year old, but already out of warranty.

How substantial will the reduction in noise as heard from below and on the floor be when using Green Glue (www.greengluecompany.com) on top of your floor joists? If it is a good idea to put this on the joists should it be spead into a film over the entire joist or just lay down a wavy bead?

Is this even worth doing or are there better solutions for reducing impact and foot-fall noise?

During the daytime, the image quality is great, but nighttime viewing is impossible since the reflection from the night-vision IR lights reflect off the window the camera is pointed out of. Any suggestions as to how I can coat the small portion of window to block the reflection while allowing the camera to see through it?

This is probably a stupid question, but me and a friend were debating about it. If it is dead, why would you put water at the bottom of it to feed it?
