No - are cut flowers dead when you buy them - no. If you put them with water they last longer. Same with the tree, put in moist soil

No Wiggs. This is a good question. I once had a Douglas Fir (most Christmas trees are Doug Firs) for a Christmas tree which I planted in the yard after Christmas and it sprouted new roots and it is now nearly 100 feet tall. This was in 1962 when I was five years old. My Dad was amazed. He never thought it would grow. Each year after that we tried to get them to root but none ever did. I guess the conditions were just right in '62.
So, my answer is; No, they are not dead until they are dead.

Hi,
The simple answer is, if it has roots then it will probably still be alive.
If you put the tree back into good soil then it may well stay alive if it isn't too far gone.
You could even plant it out in the garden after christmas if you want to.
If it hasn't got any roots then it is really dead!!!
But putting a dead tree in water will still keep it green for longer as the water will be drawn up through capillary action just like the reason why you put cut flowers in water to keep them blooming for longer.

It is dead or dying. However, you can slow the process by placing it in water, so that the phloem and xylem will continue feeding it. Because the roots have been removed, this will not be totally effective to keep it alive, but it will keep the tree from drying out too quickly and becoming a fire hazard.

If it was dead then it would be brown... You have to water the tree throughout Christmas so that it stays green and doens't look like crap

They shouldn't sell dead trees at the tree market.

Technically, yes, because the parts that make it alive, ie the roots are cut off. However obviously like with flowers, you prolong it with water and make sure to give it plenty of moisture and keep your house a little cooler than usual.

No, I do not think it is dead, but it is sadly circling the toilet.
The water prolongs the tree, but rarely till Xmas. It is usually a fire hazzard by then.
