Depends on where you live. States where I have lived required experience plus taking the Plumbing exam. Studying for the exam will show you a lot more is involved than what you see under the sink. In Florida, they required you be employed by a Master Plumber in order to take the test. I served a 5 year apprenticeship in Ohio when I became one.

Get a job with two plumbers and work 8 hours a day, 7 days a week for one and then do a night shift for the other for 8 hrs , 7 days. This will give you the experience and hours needed in half the time or less. You can have off the major holidays, but keep the phone on as you are the call man.

In most states you have to serve your time. most states have a website where you can check there local laws on this. Move to the state that has no laws but watch out for local or county laws also. If you are young do your time it will be well worth it.
