The ceilings throughout our home are 95 inches or 2.4 meters high. Low indeed. Most of the house has wooden ceiling beams. I am trying to figure out a way to better “light up the house” and am in need of good suggestions.
In one room we've solved the problem with two floor lamps and a halogen lamp on the upright piano.
In another room I've 4 wall lamps (total eight 40 what bulbs) – but it still isn’t enough. But more importantly, it's in the kitchen that we need to have more light. The ceilings have wooden beams about 10 / 12 inches apart and I've put sheet rock between the beams. I've incased 3 decorative halogen lamps (transformer hidden above the sheet rock). They give off light but it’s not enough and in any case the lamps burn out at least once a year and cost nearly 10 US dollars each to replace. I’m sure they also consume plenty of electricity.
Ah, finally – I do need to mention that we’ve neon lighting under the cupboards – above the sink, the burners and above two work counters.
Please let me know if you need more (precise) information so to give me a detailed answer.
Thanks in advance for you help.

I have brass fixtures everywhere in the home we bought. I'd like to paint the metal bronze or black for a wrought iron finish. Can this be done, and how?

My house is 100 years old. It has a wooded "bubble" frame. The people in my town back then were all brick factory workers and brick layers.

They used to steal the bricks and but then within the frame of the house as insulation.

I am in the process of tearing down the plaster walls to put up sheet rock.

Is it best to leave the bricks as insulation given the amount of time and work it would take to take them down?

Or should I take the bricks out and put up standard insulation?

I think after all these years, the brick insulation has become part of the foundation of the house.

I live in southern California where the sun shines over 300 days a year. I have a roof surface covered with fiberglass shingles. The ceiling and roof are the same installation and there is no room for insulation between them. When it is hot outside the roof radiates heat inside. The shingle are a medium gray color. I want to paint them white, hoping to reflect the heat. What kind of paint can I use and how long will it last?

I'm installing Laminate onto a very uneven concrete subloor with radiant heating. I'm looking at self levelling compound for some of the larger dips and am also considering putting a 3/8 OSB Subfloor on top of the Concrete and then 6mm Underlay/Moisture barrier. The hope is that the combination of OSB Subloor and Compound will even out the floor. Any issues with this approach? Thanks

I had 10 recessed lighting fixtures in the basement. He pulled 1 down and determined that the wires were burnt and I had to replace the ten can with six instead because the wiring was fried. He's charging me $75 per can is that too much? He's licensed but very unreliable and doesn't show up when he says he's going to. He charged me $50 per ceiling fan and $10 per switch replacement. How is his pricing??????

Tommorrow morning I plan on getting up and heading to the rental store to get a post hole digger. How hard is it to use this thing and how long should I rent it? Will it take more than 2 hours? Also, once the holes are dug, do I put the poles in then pour the concrete or pour the concrete and put the poles in the concrete within a couple minutes?
Last but not least, how deep should I dig and how hard is it to use this post hole digger? How does it start? Pull cord, turn knob or plug it in? I am new at all this, but eager for my clothes line poles if you cant tell.

So Im remodeling my powder room
(1/2 bath) theres plaster in there which I just painted and its fine.. but theres also something called "Congo Wall" (which I painted over. It's really old from what I understand. Anyway. Im in the process of putting a wooden baseboard up and the congo wall seems to be cracking a little. Not a lot though. Is this a serious problem? Also can anyone give me tips on putting down the wooden base board but making it look really fancy? I used a 1X2 or a 1X3 I think and I might put 1/4 round too but anyother suggestions would be helpful. So this is kinda like two questions in one! Thanks in advance!
