I have brass fixtures everywhere in the home we bought. I'd like to paint the metal bronze or black for a wrought iron finish. Can this be done, and how?

Not a problem
Get a can of flat black or a satin finish bronzed spray paint and tape off any area of your fixtures you don't want to paint - lay them out on a cloth or paper surface or hang with a curtain background to avoid overspray (prefferably outside)
Start spraying 6inches to the left of the fixture and pass over to the right 6 inches past and then back to the left - this passes an even coat across your fixture without over spraying a certain area where it may spatter your fixture - keep sweeping side to side until a light coat is achieved while turning your fixture (if hanging) and let dry - a second coat should be enough to achieve the wrought iron/bronze effect.
If laying down - the same rule applies except you'll need to let it dry before doing the other sides.
Love the wrought iron look too! not a big brass person.

Make sure to hand sand it first with a fine grit sand paper around a 220 grit to paint......I would suggest using a spray canned primer first such as kilz or zinsser..not water based..then paint from there with some black spray can paint...gloss or flat, this is your call the finish sheen....If you want an antique look, wipe down with a "deglosser" first..then use a antiquing kit from local hardware stores, home depot..lowes..ace hardware etc.the main thing here is the prep.. deglossing are sanding first..after scuffing the finish make sure to dust of sanding dust..the item does not need to be sanded below the original finish on it now, just scuffed up to insure proper adheision is all..lightly sand..

Yes you can and, I have. Sometimes they're a little complicated because they're so intricate but, you can paint them with finesse if your careful and use dignity.
I would get an antique kit from Wal-Mart or Home Depot and do a nice job, good luck
