What are the risks involved when planting radish seeds?

i have to do a science project and i have to plant some radish seeds but before i plant them, i have to research the risks involved and i have no idea about planting seeds!!! please help!!!! =D

Risks? Maybe that you'll have too many radishes .;D Radishes are quick & easy . 3-4 weeks to maturity & ~99+% germination rate. As they grow , thin them so that the root has room to get larger .

I wouldn't say there are any actual risks, but you will achieve the best results with a few precautions;

Sow the seeds at least 2ins apart and leave gaps so that you can sow at intervals of time - radishes grow quickly (less than a month)and become 'woody' if not picked soon after maturity, so it is easy to sow too many at the same time and then have more than you need.

Keep the radishes well watered after sowing the seed, especially in hot weather - they need both sun and rain and will not develop in very dry conditions.

Radishes can be prone to being attacked by radish fly and grubs - it helps to deter these if you can plant a few miniature marigold plants (tagetes) close to the row of radishes. The flies dislike the smell of this particular flower.

Follow the instructions on the seed packet and don't plant the seeds too deeply - once the radishes grow, you will see the tops of the bulb peeping through the soil and this will help you to decide on the pulling time.

Radishes are one of the easiest salad veg to grow, and the main problem is that, if you don't seed sparingly, you waste more than you pick. Good luck with your project.

I'm with Teri and Hyde: plant more radishes. Are they regular, summer radishes, or winter radishes (the big guys like daikon)? If they're supposed to be larger than a ping-pong ball, then the best time to plant them is in fall (or starting now, depending on your location). Still, common radishes grow fast, you can't loose if you plant a new batch. I also tried many radishes, and got the best yield was with the most common of them -- cherry belle, i guess. as for the winter radishes and the 'heirloom' summer radishes the bulb formation was meager, despite the good germination ratio and good health of each plant.

Radish seeds are known to explode on germination. Wear heavy gloves and safety goggles. Do not turn your back on the seeds. Water from the side while holding a 3/4" plate of hardened steel in front of you. Always garden with a buddy. Keep in constant visual/verbal contact with your garden buddy. Wear an OSHA approved harness when near the radish bed.

The only risk that I know of is planting them in the heat of the summer. Radishes prefer the cool days and cooler nights of spring and fall. Planting them in the summer heat will make them bolt and you will get leaves and flowers and seed, but very few radishes.

Okay, radishes are very easy to grow and grow very fast.....they take 28 days to grow on average...plant them 1 inch apart and do how ever many seeds you want. Don't leave them in the soil for to long or they will turn black and rot. If they get big and split that is okay they will almost always do that....but they still taste great!
I grow radishes in my salad garden and they are well worth it!!
