I just purchased a new home and it has a 13% Radon level in the basement. The seller is doing a radon mitigation to fix the problem. So my question is does radon mitigation get rid of the radon completely and/or stop it from coming in?How does this work exactly? After the radon mitigation are we safe? Are there things that I can do to prevent this? The basement has no door so i know it can seep up to the upstairs of the house as well. The house also has forced air upstairs pulling the air up. I have a 6 year old and we plan to live there for 5 years. Will we be safe from it or is there anything else I can do?

I've had two very large container shrubs on my patio since spring. One of them recently withered away to nothing, and the other is on its way. (I believe they weren't getting enough sun.) I want to put new plants (more shade-tolerant ones) into those containers, and I'm wondering if I need to empty out all of the old soil after removing the dead plants and their roots.

Can I leave the old soil in the pots and then just add new soil to it when I pot the new plants, or do I need to completely empty the (very large) containers and use all new fresh soil?

Thanks very much!

One day I was working in my garden and I knew that I bought tomato seeds so I planted them. The next day I went to my garden and instead of the tomato I was hoping for a giant alien sprouted up instead. Why did this happen?

They started out as caterpillars, so we put tape around the trees...that seemed to do the trick. But it's now a month or two later and they're literally swarming in my neighborhood. I don't live in the suburbs, I live in an area surrounded by wooded areas, so at least I saved my trees with the tape. But what can I do to kill them? They look like they're trying to find a place to nest in shaded areas on trash cans, fallen logs, etc. If this keeps up for several consecutive years, I believe that they can destroy the trees around my house. My neighbor bought a bug lamp, but the gypsy moths never really come out at night so it doesn't do much. I'm really out of ideas.

I have moved into a house with a dirt back yard that is as hard as a rock. the previous tenants used it as a parking lot for their ATV's. I want grass for my kids but do not have a clue on how to get started. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

There is a small underground yellowjacket nest in my front yard - the little buggers have built themselves a hideout. The entrance hole is about the size of a half dollar - I want to declare war on them and win.

I thought about just dropping the end of the hose down there and drowning them, but I fear that won't be effective enough. I don't really want to make a 3rd trip to the store today to buy chemicals to destroy them - An ideas? Some household remedies?

Note, this is somewhat close to the outside of my house, using fire isn't going to be an option.

Electrician Please:Thanks those who answered earlier & got deleted accidently.... There is now a normal electrical outlet in the wall & I want to replace it with the Leviton Switch/Outlet. I have an indoor water feature that does NOT have an on/off switch on the device. I must reach behind the water feature & plug it in to turn on & unplug it to turn it off. For this problem, I was sold the Switch / Outlet from H. D. & was told directions for install was in the box. I can't make out the directions. I would like to leave the water feature plugged in at all times and to be able to turn the water feature on/off at the combo outlet's switch. I dont need a GFCI. How do I install the Switch/Outlet? I have only a "small" amount of knowledge with electrical; although, I have changed out outlets before & have installed dimmers and ceiling fans on my own.Below is a corrected link for a description & photo of the switch/outlet:

I have a hibiscus tree and when the flower blooms fall off the seed pods that are left dry and become brown. Should I plant them now and keep the tree inside during the winter so it will grow enough to plant next summer? Or should I wait until after the frost next spring?

Is it expensive to fix water damage to concrete foundation of a house? I am purchasing a fixer-upper, that has a full basement and some damage to the foundation(mainly under the basement window areas) You can tap into the walls and the water damaged areas of concrete just fall out. Can I just knock out the damaged areas and relplace with new concrete? The problem was there was grass all the way up to the foundation on one side of the house, replaced by concrete about 7 years ago.

I was filling our new vinyl, above-ground pool today. When it was almost full I added pool shock and turned on the filter (which has a chlorine dispenser in it). An hour later I noticed the pool had a green tint to it. Everything I've been able to find online talks about algae, which obviously didn't form in a few hours. What could cause this tint?

I have an area around my back porch that would really benefit from some crawling ivy (I need to create some cover for a slatted wall).

Any recommendations on a good creeping ivy-type of plant that will thrive in a low light area? (Light heavily diffused from the trees directly above.)

I tore down the old plaster walls in my soon to be daughters room and then insluated and put up drywall. After 3 coats of join compound and sanding I started to prime the walls. After doing so I see areas where my sanding just didnt' cut it. It is very hard to sand the primer off is there a better way to get rid of it and then re-sand/re-prime?
