Yep - lion dung (or other big cat poo) will do it. Apparently. Or... pepper dust (get from DIY shop or pet shop), or orange peel - they hate the smell of oranges. Or get a water pistol and shoot them (GENTLY!) when you catch them at it. cats hate water. Or get your own cat - they are quite territorial and won't cross into another cats back yard. Your cat can be trained to poo in a litter tray (or if your evil, your neighbour's garden!!!)

Impossible unless you sort your boundary out like a fortress, even then they are hard to stop altogether. Earlier this year we put meshes across the bottoms of the inner gate, it did stop a few from coming down into the garden, but since the neighbour is higher up than us, it is rather futile.
I've found all the 'suggested' pepper, chili et cetera, none of it works.
My Dad swears by coffee, he has been chucking the dregs out over a patch the cats here seem to love and surprisingly they aren't going there anymore, however wood-chip has also recently been put down there, so there is no conclusive proof :)
It is terrible, this morning when I came back from my run a cat was in my garden, sitting down ever so patiently staring at the hedge which is a birds favourite. Needless to say it got a cold shower! Later on the afternoon it was on the shed, I was just about to go and scare it off when I saw a flurry of birds flying away, I don't know if it got one, I just hope not.
Good luck.

Get a motion-detector sprinkler. Sold at most hardware stores or garden shops. You can set it for different animals - cats, deer, etc. It is fast and violent when it senses movement. It worked wonders to keep my dog out of the garden and the birds don't set it off. That way you don't have to sit there with a water pistol.
Only problem is that I forget about it and get a shot of cold water up the crotch.

With difficulty.
Buy loads of rubber snakes. (yes this works) and put them around the garden Fill empty plastic bottles with water. or put old mirrors in the garden. The reflection scares the cats.
Sonic cat scarer.
Buy some scoot powder.
You can get plants which repel cats.
Buy your own cat (they are very territorial) and pull its teeth out. (just kidding)

1. don't use gravel,,, cats think it is a giant litter tray
2. use orange peel and lemon peel,,, cats don't like citrus smells
3. you could buy some electronic gadget,, from somewhere like B&Q,,, some send out high pitch sounds - cats do not like and we can not hear,
4. another gadget you can buy,, squirts water at the cat,, and also at anything that triggers the sensor :-)
5. some plants deter cats,, some are spikey and some have smells cats don't like,,, there are also some plants cats really love so don't have any of those.
6. you could also get a dangerous dog :-)

Sprinkle pepper around the perimeter of your garden. Or put 2 tubs pepper into your watering can and water the whole lawn with it. Hope this helps, regards

I really hate cats in my garden too. They poo there and not in their own place. I've got a giant water pistol that I shoot them with if I see them. Otherwise I suppose a dog would work but then I'd have to deal with its poo too.

anything citrus works as a detterent so, orange peel, lemon peel etc.
The pepper thing that someone else mentioned
The maddest thing i saw, was old dog hair stuffed into tights and placed at certain places around the edge of your garden, but its really unsightly
A shotgun would probably be goodtoo
