We are fixing the house up but we don't want to fix up the whole house because we are just starting out and can't afford it. But we are going to fix up the areas that will be the strongest selling points in the house. So we are wondering what they are? We are working on the kitchen right now, because to me that is an area that should be nice.

When we wash clothes, there is water all over the floor. I initially thought it was the wash machine but the technician said it was not the machine, it's the drain on the floor getting backed up. So I went and bought a bottle of drain unclogger. My question is, should I pour it into the pipe where the hose coming from the wash machine is going into, or should I pour it directly into the drain on the floor?

We have an older house, circa late 60's, and I just discover today that behind some loose tiles in one of our tub/showers that there is dry rot in the wall. The plaster/dry wall is crumbling, but it appears the studs are in good shape. Does anyone know of a good web site that might show how to replace the wall? I have only very basic carpentry skills, but I think I might be able to handle it given enough information.

It is an older house, built in 83, so I am sure they used greenboard which I have heard isn't that good. I want to use large tiles, 12 X 12. Any ideas would be great thanks.

I live in a city in Atlantic Canada, and our neighbourhood was built during the mid to late 1950s. It is made up of primarily bungalows. Lately I've noticed that a lot of the houses in our neighbourhood have a small orange light accompanied by what appears to be a megaphone in the front of the house. They are usually placed under the lip of the roof, somewhere near either the front door or garage. The orange light is similar to the kind of light you might see on a boat or motorcycle, a small orange circular piece of plastic, not a normal outdoor house light. I'm wondering what these are. Romantically I like to think that they have something to do with the Cold War. Could they have anything to do with air raids or bomb shelters? This kind of thing is very interesting to me, so I'd love to hear your answers.

I am finishing our basement and am undecided how to cover up the electrical junction box. We have thought about bi-fold doors or a painting. I am wondering if anyone has run into this and how they took care of it.
