For some reason, I got my electricity bill this month and it was 300 dallors. Nearly tripled from last month. I live in Texas, in a 1100 sq. ft. apartment, downstairs, hardwood floors, with lots of windows, built in the 30's, recently renovated. It's central heat and air. Summers in Texas are hot and I expected a high bill for it, but this was higher and it is nearly winter. It got kinda cold for like a week and a half and I had the heat on. But the majority of the time my heat and air have been off. I called the electric company and spent an hour on the phone with them, but of course they couldn't help me. They did teach me how to read the meter and I did. I did the calculations and the meter read was right. I just can't believe I used 2400 kilowatts vs 787 kilowatts last billing cycle. Plus, they lowered my charge per kilowatt. What is going on? I am afraid it will be the same next billing cycle since the winter is just starting. Also, I just moved into this apartment in September.

I'm not at all sure how to categorize this question, so I'll post it in multiple places nd hope someone has some experience in the matter.

Comparatively speaking, what sort of temperature (general feel, not specific numbers), amount of flame (not just glowing embers), length and efficiency of burn, and amount/appearance of ash can be expected when burning blocks of peat, lengths of hardwood, and chunks of anthracite coal? I'm trying to gather info for novel-writing in lower-technology settings, so I'm more interested in sensory input and daily usage (smell, warmth, appearance, practical efficiency) than in scientific figures, though I'll be thankful for any info at all....

I recently moved into a house that was refinished, but they apparently forgot to finish the bathtubs. They are matte, not slick and shiny and they have some stains and rough patches. I think they're so gross I don't even want to take a bath in them! I've seen people painting bathtubs on tv shows, but Lowe's said they didn't have bathtub paint. Do I need to call plumber or someone else to have this done? I'm willing to pay someone else to do it or do it myself, just need to know what's involvwed or who I should call. Thanks!

Solid oak kitchen table has a white stain where someone placed something hot. I am not able to get this stain removed and really do not want to have to strip the entire table top. The wood does not look burned rather it looks like the finish may be. Is it possible the furniture polish I used is the culprit here? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!
Mike

This was an Airwick brand distributed by Reckitt Benckiser. I am not asking for help on fixing the floor, rather trying to find out if others have had problems with their hot oil type fresheners leaking.

Reckitt Benckiser has requested that I send the unit back to them for evaluation, however currently there is no damage to the wick or anywhere else on the unit, and I have no control over what happens to the unit once I send it to them.

One thing for certain, I will not allow these things anywhere near my home in the future.

What does an "unpasted" and "untrimmed wallpaper means?

I replaced my bathroom sink about 4 months ago and over the last few weeks there is a very bad odor coming from the sink. The water runs off great so it's not clogged with gunk.

What can I use to get rid of (not cover up) the nasty cigarette smell in the headliner and interior of a used car that I just bought for my daughter? Great deal on a nice car she really likes if we can get past this one bad point. Thanks.

The faucet in our bathroom has been leaking ever since we moved into our home. At first it was just a little trickle every now and then but now it pours out water all day no matter how tight we made the handle. How can I fix this?

We live in a home with all linoleum floors. I have several area rugs to cover up the spaces. One rug in particular though keeps on moving around when we walk across it or we move it. It's not a big deal but it's just one of those little things that can get on a person's nerves!

Do you have any ideas on how to keep it in place? It's a smaller rug (3'x6') in the middle of a small room, so putting furniture on it is not an option! Thank you for all your help.

I'm looking to buy an investment property that has a huge propane tank in the back of the house to fuel the home. How safe are these and what is the advantage of propane vs other fuels in terms of home use? Also what are the costs compared to electric or other gases?

Through over zealous cleaning (rubbing) and probably using cheap leather cleaners my cream leather suite has lost some of its pigmentation. What can I do to restore the colour. Would cream shoe polish be any good. Failing this what can I do to limit further damage.

I have discovered that the house I live in has a manhole in the living room - the living room is in an extension that was built at a different stage to when the house was built.

Now, do you know if this means the house is not fit for rental and should therefore have never been rented out? If so, can I sue the landlord and get my money back? I've been in the house for 4 years, but only found out recently when a neighbour renovating his house asked me if he could have access to the manhole in my living room to unblock the drain.

what do you suggest I do? I'm renting with foxtons, in clapham

I am renting one for tonight and the solution is so darn expensive. Is there a concoction, homemade or store bought, that I could use instead of the traditional steam cleaning solutions? I need something that works very good, the carpets are terrible with dog odors. Thanks!

It is leaking into the room below, I have used silicone caulk, but have a suspiscion that the whole shower needs to be taken apart and sealed. Problem is, the ceiling was built around the frame. I think the immovable glass frame, trimmed in metal was connected to the wall without sealing it first. The protective coating was not removed and now the corner unit is a mess. I can't find the man who did the job. I have to fix this myself somehow and am not real handy. The pan is 32x32". The unit opens on the corner-two glass sliders, two laminate walls, and the guy used drywall. I have to fix this cheaply. What do I do?
