Earlier today, we had a storm that fried a wire in our home, and half of our house is without power - and airconditioning. We have a window airconditioner in the bedroom, but all the nearby outlets are without power.

Now, someone from the power company is coming in the morning to fix the wires. Is it safe to hook the air conditioner up to an extension cord for a few hours? I was told once that you weren't supposed to.

I'm venting the exhaust up to my roof. There are separate vents near the top of the unit that would be used to vent the exhaust into the kitchen if there was no external venting available. The lacquer on my cabinets above those vents is starting to peel off, so I'd like to just cover those vents up. Is there any potential problem with that?

I have a ceiling fan with a light underneath it that takes a regular light bulb. But when I try to use a compact fluorescent bulb, it flickers. Can someone tell my why?

I love hot peppers. In my garden now I have jalapenos, habaneros, cayennes, pequines, black night, medusa, thai dragon, tabascos and a few milder peppers. I like them best when they turn red and I eat them right off the vine with whatever meal Im having. I think the term "ornamental pepper" is just code for if you cant take it, dont eat it. What do you think?

to move and they gave me a form saying what my costs will be if I don't clean my apt. It all seemed reasonable, then I get to the bottom of the form and it says "Upon moveout all carpets need to be professionally cleaned". I've never had to do this before and couldn't find anything in the lease. Does this seem reasonable?

I came home and the wastebasket was full to the brim with water and the two bathroom rugs are soaked. The carpet outside the bathroom isn't wet. (I'm in a downstairs apartment). There's no sign of moisture from the ceiling. What could have caused this?
