I came home and the wastebasket was full to the brim with water and the two bathroom rugs are soaked. The carpet outside the bathroom isn't wet. (I'm in a downstairs apartment). There's no sign of moisture from the ceiling. What could have caused this?

I live alone and was only gone for 3 hours today.

The shower was last used 12 hours ago. The waste basket is located between the sink and the toilet.

I'm assuming the floor around the rugs is not wet because it already evaporated.

My best guess would be you have a leak under/behind your toilet! You may need to get down and look around behind your toilet to see if there is a leak. Good luck!!!

Well I commend you on your question. The answer is obvious. It came from a water pipe. I hate to be the one to tell you this. Water seeks its own level. Therefore if your basket is full and your rugs are wet and the floor around the rugs is not wet and the out side carpet is not wet , then this leaves just one conclusion, you put the water in the basket and you wet the rugs or wait oh wait just a minute , I have it figured out , yes oh why did not I think of this before. The water is from a foreign source as in an alien( now play spooking music in your head to get the full effect of me saying it is an alien) playing tricks on you cause you are simple stated the cutest girl in the world and he wants to meet you and have many cross bred children with you.

There could have been a possible leak somewhere in the bathroom. I definetly Know that humidity couldn't have caused this problem based on your description. Do you have kids? They can also be the trouble as big as spilling water by mistake or a plain practicle joke. Im not trying to be mean. just thoights

Do you have young kids? Is the shower spray angled towards the basket or could it at least have a leak that the curtain didn't catch?

A horse broke into your place and pissed in the waste basket and it overflowed all over your floor. How the hell should we know about your water problem?

maybe the toilet overflowed while you were out and the plug in the tank did not come down for awhile so the water kept running out of the toilet.
