First, a word of caution about torching ant hills. It's illegal in a lot of places because of the toxins it puts in the soil and water table. Also, it's DANGEROUS! I was in Shriner's Burns Institute with a kid with burns over 60% of his body from doing this. The fumes went up his pants legs and ignited. He was crippled for the rest of his life. So keep that in mind.

There are several granulated fire ant killers you can get at pretty much any lawn and garden department to spread over your lawn. They work well enough in Texas and we have SEVERE fire ant problems here.

Use a multiple step approach . First , dump a few gallons of boiling water directly on the nest . repeat this a few times , over the course of a day or so . Then , go to the sotre and get some Boric Acid. Its the main ingredient in most ant poisons . Apply it to the ant hill, and the area directly around it ( keep kids and pets away ..) The ants will carry it down into the hive , and hopefully feed it to the queen ant . It will kill her , and any other ants that ingest it )
If you stay at using the boiling water , you may not need the Boric Acid ... My mom had them in Florida , and this got rid of all of them in her yard .Stay vigilante , watching for new nests , and hit them ASAP with the same treatment .. Good Luck !

exterminator is the best way. I used to take a trowel and dig the up quickly (without getting bit) and spray them with ant pesticide once they were all mad. They come back but at least you can control them to some extent. They will come back with the exterminator as well if your yard isnt treated every 2 weeks.

Lots of soap studs. Chemical is environmental friendly and it kills the ants pretty quickly. Imagine getting stuck in a pocket of air that runs out in minutes - suffocation.

Another way is to use lots of cooking oil and mix it in with soil.
Does the same thing as above.

a little bit of gassolin and a match on the ant hill. burn out the fire ants. if you think thats insane then you could sprinkle Cinnamon oll over the nest. both are effective. the the fire is more effective.

cheapest (though illegal) way would be to go get some diesel fuel (not gasoline, its explosive) and soak the mound. or there is something called teminex. it is specifically formulated to kill ants. also there is a soap called borax powder. my mom used to use it to kill ants

i have heard of folk pouring kerosene on them and burning them. yet to me this sounds risky and consider lifeless patches of lifeless grass on your backyard.. i'm certain there is a few insectisides obtainable only for those pesty insects.
