ICE Initiative is the "In Case of Emergency" cellular contact. It's really simple. People program numbers into their cell phones under ICE. The number listed is an emergency contact should that person become unable to communicate in the event of an emergency. Some people have more than one ICE. I have 4 listed in my cell.

How many of you utilize this? If you do use it, does it make you feel safer that your family/friends/parents/physican can be contacted quickly?

ICE started in Europe and is taking hold here in the states. I think it is an excellent idea and I now will check a patient's cell phone to see if there is an ICE contact listed. It can be anyone who is familiar with you and your medical history...your mom, dad, spouse, sibling, child, doctor, next door neighbor...anyone. It also works with programmable home phones. The ICE contact can be called using YOUR phone so it's a number the contact will recognize.

What do you all think?

I'm a long time diabetic. I'm also an EMT. As we all know, medic alerts are life savers. I wear minimal jewelry (an engagement ring, necklace, small earrings and a watch). I do not wear a medic alert bracelet. Some years ago when I lost my 4th bracelet, I stopped wearing one. I decided since the diabetes wasn't going to go away, I got a medic alert tattoo. It's a red caduceus with "IDDM" underneath it. It's on my abdomen at about waist level. My question is how many of you have seen medic alert tattoos? Do you think they are as effective as a bracelet or necklace? I still carry a medic alert card in my wallet (I am a member of Medic Alert). The tattoo is easily seen. I have asked others and the opinions seem to be fairly evenly divided. Would you look for a tattoo? If so, where would you look? I'd be interested to know what others think. Thanks.

Hi! I was washing dishes and had, stupidly, put a pair of scissors in the water. I cut a chunk of skin off of the side of my pinky finger. I've been putting Neosporin on it everyday and have kept it covered. This happened last Thursday and it still looks pretty much the same. Should I keep it covered all the time? My husband says I should let it dry out. My daughters dermatologist told us to keep her cuts moist to promote healing but my husband insists that he's right. Thanks for your advice! : )

My sons school says that they do not administer any kind of first aid in their school. The only thing they can give is a band-aid and always call the parents to come to the school to apply antibiotic cream. I am a nurse, do they really think that I can or even will be able to leave my patients at the hospital to come to the school and apply cream to a simple cut or scrape? I also work 45 minutes from the school so that means a total of 90 minutes out of work for a scrape! I also cannot leave my job without having another nurse to care for my patients, can you see the problems this causes. I think it would be so simple for someone in the school to be trained in first aid. Does anyone know the laws for Michigan public schools?
